Vietnam is very long and narrow, about 2000 km north–south, much like Norway.
Chan May is an old port in the middle of nowhere I should say. About 80 km to the north you have the important imperial city of Hue and about 50 km to the south, Vietnam’s fifth largest city - Da Nang – is situated at the mouth of the Han River. About 20 km further south you find the pretty river town - Hoi An – which in 1999 was inscribed on the World Heritage list.Da Nang is becoming a modern “high rise” city with a lot of holiday resort areas on the beaches, “plastered with” five star hotels and casino’s for rich people from Korea and Japan - maybe China? I understood the guides worry when she said in the future the beaches will only be for tourists and rich people, no public beaches for the local people.
