Somebody made the decision not to develop Fremantle as the main city of Western Australia, because further up the Swan river – after the big lake it passes through – there are a much more picturesque area with some low hills which was more suitable for such cityplan. So Perth the new big city –capital of West Australia- was developed there, approximate 20 km up the Swan river. Perth has today 1,7 million inhabitants, while in the rest of Western Australia have only 0,5 million.
Fremantle today is the city with the big harbour at the narrow mouth of Swan river. It remained an independent city because it was the oldest settlement, while all the other small towns in the area became suburbs to Perth.
