To
Nagasaki Japan at Sea dag 123.
Left Shanghai dag 122, kl.
1300 and kl. 2000 the harbor-pilot left CrySy.
The pier was on the left side of the narrow river Huangpu.
As they Navigate the ships to the right side of the
river, we had to cross over to get into line.
The small Tugs with barges, the sampans, the cargo
ships and even ocean liners made a long line.
You must be patient and wait until there is a break in
the slow-moving que.
When in the que, the “fast” small boats overtake -
like motorbikes in the streets-.
When we reached the point where Huangpu join the big
river Yangtze it was all filled up.
Apparently, there is no control, at one time CrySy
stood still for several minutes.
Everybody knows that it is very difficult to turn or
move a ship with 0 speed.
The Pilot even tried to use CrySy big horn, but it was
totally ignored by all the small boats.
I think the only way was to speed up, and I am sure
the small boats would get out of the way,
because they would get hurt,
if they scratch the big ship. On the other hand, the Cruise line would probably
be banned from the harbor, so that was no solution.
Those communist countries are
controlling everything but the traffic. One of the guides in Vietnam bragged
that they neither used right or left hand driving, but they all used the middle of the road.
If you have tried crossing the
street in Ho Chi Minh City, you will have experienced that if you wait until
there is a pause in the traffic of motorbikes, you will probably still be
standing there waiting.
The “system” there is, walk
out into the street and the motorbikes will avoid hitting you by planning to
pass in front of you or behind you, but if you stop, it becomes real dangerous,
because their estimates of your movements suddenly are wrong and they must
improvise and that would be risky for both parts.

Excursion Panoramic Nagasaki
kl. 0830
Nagasaki is situated on the northwestern shore of Kyushu Island. It was
home to a major Imperial Japanese Navy base.
During World War II, Hiroshima and Nagasaki was atomic bombarded. It
made the Japanese surrender and end the war.
Today the big Japanese firm Mitsubishi has its headquarters here. The
City is completely rebuilt and Mitsubishi is very successful on the world
markets.
As a curiosity, Puccini’s Opera, Madame Butterfly, was inspired by the
Glover Mansion, built by Thomas Blake Glover a Scottish entrepreneur, who
contributed to modernization of Japanese shipbuilding industry.
